The MEL 80 laser machine is housed in the upgraded Opthalmology Out-Patient Department of Manipal Hospital. The procedure is used to treat eye conditions like Myopia (near sight), Hyperopia (far sight) and astigmatism. Over the years, spectacles have been used for correcting these defects and in the last four decades contact lenses was the only other alternate. Now, patients will be able to get rid of these diseases with LASIK. “We envisage patients coming over the weekend and getting the procedure done. They can get back to work on Monday after being ‘transformed’ over the weekend”, said Dr. Manoj Mathai, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Manipal Hospital. “The MEL 80 will enable our experienced surgeons to set new standards in accurate vision correction, which is safer and predictable”. Manipal Hospital is the only hospital in city which is open all 365 days including Sundays and National Holidays. MEL 80 has industry leading parameters in spot size, speed and tracking and it has set new standards in delivering accurate and consistent visual results. The Rs. 2 Crore equipment incorporates the latest WAVEFRONT technology which allows a customized treatment for every patient. In a LASIK surgery, the ophthalmic surgeon uses a microsurgical instrument and a specialized Excimer laser beam to reshape the cornea which alters the focusing power of the eye. This allows patient with defective eye sights to become less dependant on spectacles or contact lenses. After a LASIK Surgery, the visual recovery is rapid and most people will be able to see clearly well within a day or two. It is a painless procedure with very few restrictions LASIK is advised for patients above the age of 20 who have had a stable prescription for at least one year. The patient should not have any other eye diseases like cataract or glaucoma. It is also not advised for ladies who are pregnant or planning pregnancy in near future.
