Peritoneal Dialysis Centre of Excellence opens at Manipal Hospital

Home Dialysis Centre introduces patient-friendly initiatives

Bangalore, November 23, 2005: The peritoneal dialysis centre was inaugurated today at the Manipal Hospital by Prof. Amulya K.N. Reddy, Member – Board of International Energy Initiatives and a recipient of many awards for outstanding contribution to science and technology.

This unique state-of-the-art centre is a single window one-stop centre for counselling in all forms of renal replacement therapy to every patient having end-stage renal disease, helping them take a well-informed decision of the modalities of therapy that they wish to choose. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Amulya said, “Peritoneal dialysis helps patients of renal failure lead a normal life”. He stressed the importance of training patients and the need to produce excellent training manuals.

For people with ‘end stage renal disease’, there are three options of therapy – Kidney transplantation, Maintenance Haemodialysis and Chronic Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). Speaking on the occasion, Dr. H. Sudarshan Ballal, Director – Manipal Institute of Nephrology and Urology said, “Kidney disease is a very devastating problem in our country and it is widely believed that around 1, 50,000 to 2, 00,000 people develop severe kidney failure in India. Only about 5 to 10 percent of the patients receive any form of therapy because of lack of infrastructure and financial constraints”.

“The centre will be an important repository of information for doctors and other care-givers managing large CAPD units. This new centre is an addition to many other patient friendly initiatives taken by Manipal Hospital”, said Mr. R. Basil, CEO Manipal Hospital and Manipal Health Systems.

The counsellors at the centre are trained with specialised training modules to provide necessary training on CAPD to patients having end-stage renal disease. Special audio-visual aid in patient education is also available. This Home Dialysis Centre at Manipal Hospital is one of the few centres in the country offering such services in conjunction with Baxter Corporation, USA.
