Since its inception, Manipal Hospital Bangalore has been providing Free and Concessional Healthcare to the deserving and needy. The Department of Social Work streamlines the process of granting such concessional care. The department evaluates patients who require or ask for such free and concessional care at the hospital, both as outpatients and inpatients. These patients are not only those who walk in but also those referred from other Institutions and Doctors. The vision and mission of the staff is to enrich and preserve-to inspire and be ‘Inspired by Life’. To that end we have a strong commitment to extend all our resources to the poor and needy. The same resources and medical expertise available to those who can afford the treatment is made available to the needy and deserving patients who cannot afford the cost of the treatment. In the year 2005-2006, nearly Rs.5.03 crores has been spent in providing free care in all the disciplines of medical treatment including Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, Oncology Surgery, Medicine, Pediatric Intensive Care etc. Institutions that have benefited by the Free and Concessional Health Policy of the Hospital are : Orphanages Institution for physical & other handicaps Institution working with street / working children Leprosy rehabilitation clinics Homes for children/people affected by HIV Shelter for destitute women
Sometimes, when a patient is brought to the Emergency and his identity is not known, the social workers are called in to trace the antecedents and contact the family or friends of the patient. We also coordinate a Volunteer Support System, wherein interested persons from nearby areas can volunteer their time in different ways. In special circumstances, home visits are conducted when it would benefit the doctor in deciding a treatment regimen or to check out the veracity of information given by the patient or informant. Mehaboob Ali – a 5 day old boy born with a congenital heart defect which required an emergency surgery to save his life. This surgery has to be done in two stages – the total cost of which will be around Rs. 1, 35,000/- after concessions. The child’s father has sold his auto to pay for this, but is still short of Rs.40,000-the doctors say the prognosis is good and so it was quite necessary to arrange for funds to save this child. Through the kindness of our donors we were able to raise this balance amount and complete the surgery. The child is now doing well. The Radiotherapy Department of the Hospital also treats a number of poor patients at free or affordable rates for radiotherapy.
The Hospital also offers concession in Dialysis Charges for poor and needy patients. The Department of Community Medicine conducts regular outreach camps at a village Jakkur, as well as camps at slums, NGO’s, and other social welfare organizations. At the recently conducted camps at Sudhamanagar, Manchanayakanahalli, Vajaralli, patients requiring further treatment at Manipal Hospital have been identified and referred. The treatment will be done at concessional rates wherein the patient will have to pay only for the consumables and medicines used on him and the Doctor’s charges and Hospital charges are waived off. We are looking for Donors and sponsors who will support us financially in our ongoing activities to help the deserving, poor and needy.
